St. Expedite altar

My Expedite altar is all set.🕯

If you’ve been following my Instagram stories, you know that over the past year or so, I’ve been establishing a relationship with St. Expedite. This wasn’t exactly intentional, but if you know anything about him, you’re likely familiar with his propensity for service (and his craftiness). After a few truly funny encounters, I was driven to establish an altar.

Traditionally, Ex is the spirit of quick solutions. According to legend, Expeditus was an Armenian martyr from the 4th century (“expedite” referring to a foot-soldier that carried light equipment and moved quickly). On the day Ex decided to convert, the Devil took the form of a crow and told him he must wait until the next day. Angry, Expedite stomped on the bird, declaring, "It must be done today!" He died a martyr on April 19, 303, in Melitene, Turkey.

In addition to the crow, he’s often pictured with a cross inscribed with the Latin word hodie ("today") and a palm branch to symbolize martyrdom.

He’s considered by some to conceal veneration to Mercury. One scandalous rumor states that his character was invented when crates of the statues marked “Expedite” arrived in America, but in truth, Ex first shot to popularity in the middle ages, especially in Italy.

Some regard him as a subversive spirit and may petition him for revenge, though many devotees insist on his complete kindness.

Classic offerings include flowers (especially red and pink carnations), red and green candles, whiskey, and Sara Lee pound cake.

Accordingly, if Ex grants a request, he expects a swift reward. He also lives for the applause, so it’s customary to sing his praises when he comes through.

I was fortunate to encounter Ex on my path and am grateful for the opportunity to add this space. It’s already evolved into a place of action and curiosity—the air to my main altar’s earth.🌞

My 7-day candle is from @mountain_conjure who has a really great collection of Expedite ritual supplies. I also found thrifted shutters which I thought were perfect for giving Expedite a super-quick exit. I love the illusion of a window.
