Ort hearthcraft spell for needleworkers

Here’s an easy little hearthcraft spell for my fellow knot and needle workers. 🧵

Now that we’ve survived the holidays (if only barely), I’m starting to turn my attention back to the hearth and nestle in for the next few weeks of winter before I have to start thinking about garden prep.

When working in needle and textile arts, you’re likely to collect a tangled mass of leftover snips of thread that remain when you’re done stitching. In cross stitch, we call them orts.

Orts are similarly instilled with the focus and intention (and often, love) you weave and infuse into your project. These clips can be harnessed into an easy charm for your home—simply save your bits of thread over time in a jar. You might also add charms or hair to represent your home and family. Once filled, seal the jar and place an herb or rock on the lid that, for you, represents peace and safety. Leave it undisturbed on your altar for three days.

Once finished, keep the jar tucked away in your home. If you have access to an attic, you may consider keeping it in the rafters to act as a protective canopy over the home.

We’ve finally gotten some snow over the last week but it’s been bittersweet without Velcro. I’m still keeping busy but it’s been tough finding motivation. Luckily needlework has always helped narrow my focus and keep my thoughts calm. ❄️
