The start of harvest season is the perfect time to make an Appalachian sachet (or jack). Rather than using cloth, I recommend stuffing a peach pit, which results in the perfect small, secret charm.🍑

Like sachets, jacks can be set with any intention (but especially protection, healing, and love). You can fill it with herbs, tiny crystals, or the ash from a spell. In Appalachian lore, you would pack it with a poultice to attract a spouse and wear it on your garter.

To create your own, remove the pit from a peach (preferably one you’ve eaten). Wash and dry.

Carefully open the pit. I’ve had the most success inserting the tip of a knife into the slit and *gently* tapping the top of the knife with a hammer.

Remove the seed and fill the pit. I used some of my yarrow (folk names: allheal, angel flower, soldier’s woundwort) for protection.

Glue the pit shut or bind with twine. Rub it in your hands and say a blessing. Baptize your pit in water (not smoke or fire, as burning peach trees is very bad luck).

Carry your jack with you. Don’t let it touch the ground (if you do drop it, bury and start fresh). If it falls apart naturally, you can repair and reuse. While jacks should be kept private, I love the idea of wearing one of these during early harvest (which is also peach season in Pennsylvania).🌞
