Today is the first day of Carnival! I had a minute to bake and tried my first King Cake. I'm still learning how to make a good dough, but aside from being kind of dense, it turned out pretty good!

King Cakes are basically cinnamon-role rings popular in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. I've always lived in the north, but grew up seeing them around Mardi Gras. I always thought they were fun due to all of the correspondences:

-green sprinkles for faith
-purple sprinkles for justice
-gold sprinkles for power

Traditionally, a porcelain or plastic baby is also pushed inside after baking, symbolizing luck and prosperity for whoever finds it. (I didn't have a baby on hand, so I used an orange peel, which also carries luck and love.)
