Rose petal beads | Botanical Anthology

I had the opportunity to make a batch of rose petal beads for the winter edition of Botanical Anthology Magazine (releasing today!). These were created in honor of Valentine’s Day, but flower petal beads are a lovely way to honor any special occasion associated with roses.🥀

Rose petal beads have been produced for centuries, especially in the creation of rosaries. The word "rosary" comes from the Latin word “rosarium,” which means "rose garden" or "garland of roses.” They were a popular choice for prayer beads, not only because of the symbolism but due to the fragrance they retain.

The creation process includes processing tons of petals with a mortar and pestle, “cooking” the resulting pulp into clay, and forming beads using a knitting needle or skewer. Once dry, you’ll have a collection of matte, nearly-black beads that look beautiful strung alone or with corresponding charms. (It’s best not to use white or pastel-colored roses, as they’ll result in yellow or brownish beads—unless that’s what you’re going for!)

Full directions are included in the winter 2023 edition of Botanical Anthology, which publishes both print and digital versions (see @plantwondercollective for more info). If you’re not familiar with the magazine, it’s absolutely packed with beautiful, plant-centered magic for the season (there are over 50 articles with ways to bring herbs to your apothecary, kitchen, crafts, and winter celebrations).

Until 12/4, you can get a copy for $18 and receive the All About Ginger and Herbal Cookie Tray bonus booklets (plus an extra $2 off through Monday). You can download the digital version instantly or find the printed version on Amazon.

Hope you have a calm and cozy weekend! 🖤
