Happy Valentine’s Day! A lot of you know that I was in ✨dire✨ need of a distraction this past weekend, so fortunately, I found an excuse to work with my hands. I took a lovely class with @kzstevens to create this pocket.

The course was through @tatterbluelibrary which, if you’re interested in learning ways to work with textile (even as a beginner), is constantly offering the best classes. (They have one coming up on Syrian cross stitch that I’m desperate to take.)

Tie-on pockets were worn by women before they had pockets in their clothes or carried purses (vintage fanny pack!). They were tied around their waists and hidden within the skirts of their dresses.

The design on the front is my Mourning Sampler pattern (available on etsy). I honestly had a great time using scissors to slice through my stitching. Super cathartic.

I also want to keep mentioning:

If you’ve seen my stories over the past week and a half, you know that I haven’t shut up about the Norfolk Southern train disaster. In case you missed it (you’re not alone!), a freight train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio on February 3rd. Many cars were carrying extremely hazardous materials (hundreds of thousands of gallons), which were subsequently burned into the atmosphere and spilled into the ground and waterways, including the Ohio River.

While the evacuation order was quickly lifted and officials continue to claim that everything’s safe, people are becoming ill, animals are dying, and streams are flowing with dead fish.

It’s been wildly underreported and dampened at a national level. On top of that, there are local writers who use their voices to actively downplay the catastrophe (while somehow also managing to slip racism into the conversation).

I’m working harder to trust my instincts but it’s been a rollercoaster. I appreciate your messages!❤️

The best, most up-to-date information, including detailed overviews of statements released by the EPA, is being compiled and shared by @nickdrom (especially on TT). His most recent videos give a better idea of what’s actually happening here.
