There are a few different types of black salt, but in folk magic, it’s something slightly different. You could likely make some right now with the tools you already have in your kitchen.🍳

Seen often in curses (and counteracting them), black salt is created using the scrapings of a cast iron skillet or cauldron. In spellwork, it can replace table salt to enhance potency or be thrown toward evil to repel it. Aside from hexing and protection, you might also use it for a deeper cleanse. (Note: It’s not edible and should not be used in baths.)

Once you’ve collected remnants from your skillet, you simply grind them in a mortar and pestle (or processor) with a scoop of rough sea salt.

When finished, bless or consecrate your salt and keep it with the rest of your valuables.

This type of “recipe” makes it easy to summon your inner kitchen witch. Try ritualistically sprinkling bits of herbs into your pan and praying/chanting/talking to your ancestors or spirits. Stir the bits around with your charged spoon. Of course, be sure to care for your skillet or cauldron and clean it based on the instructions for your specific pan.

🌲Patrons: In this morning’s article, I included extended instructions and additional pictures to guide you through the ritual of creating black salt, including intentionally generating scrapings (another opportunity to add your own correspondences!). You’ll also find over half a dozen ideas for incorporating black salt into your practice. For example, you can place a small jar of it in your dresser or jewelry box for added protection over those items. I'm looking forward to sharing a preview of your March gift this week!
