Here are a few of my favorite books that explore the relationship between saint veneration and folk magic.🪶

After realizing my own magical traditions and superstitions were already intertwined with my everyday routine and grounded in local lore, I’ve learned that there are so many different branches of folk magic that have their own deeply-rooted histories but also share a lot of common practices and beliefs.

Encyclopedia of Mystics, Saints & Sages by @judikailles — I reference this at least weekly. It includes saints from a variety of religions as well as their feast days, offerings, allies, etc. I love that it presents a folksier approach to spirits and their presence in our lives.

New World Witchery by @newworldwitchery — This is an extensive resource that shares the backgrounds, stories, and connections among a number of traditions as well as ways to integrate corresponding rituals into your own practice. While there isn’t a particular focus on saints, it gives an idea of how different groups approach spirits, angels, etc.

These next three are focused on more specific branches of folk magic but are so valuable for learning about various approaches to veneration, Marian devotion, and religion.

Italian Folk Magic by Mary-Grace Fahrun — This is an intimate (and lovely) journey into Italian folk practices. In her section on saints, Fahrun makes it clear: “You do not have to be Catholic or Christian to work with saints.”

Backwoods Witchcraft by @jake_richards13 — Richard’s book not only includes information on several saints and Mary, but also provides a particularly personal look at his own background and traditions. It really gives a sense of how deeply a practice can be woven into a practitioner’s day-to-day life and faith.

American Brujeria by @oregon_wood_witch — American Brujeria shares a heartfelt, authentic view of Mexican folk magic, including the stories of Mexican saints, Guadalupe, novena candles, medals, etc. as well as commonalities with other American practices.

All are written with an abundance of love and respect.
