Here’s how to make snow (or ice!) candles, perfect for cleansing, defrosting, and celebrating the awakening of the upcoming season.🌱

Snow is a really lovely ingredient for spellwork, especially this time of year. While I anticipate Western PA getting hit with at least one more blizzard, with Imbolc occurring this evening, it's fun to capture a bit of winter essence before it's gone. (If you don't have access to snow, substitute ice--you can mix small chunks with a bit of cold earth or outdoor herbs for a similar effect.) You may also get lucky with some snow on Sunday's full moon (or freeze some moon water!).

Since snow and ice are so closely associated with water, it carries the same feminine, cleansing, and purification power. Like stormwater, the nature of the snow (peaceful, fluffy, turbulent) can also affect its energy.

With these candles, you can set some final intentions and have them defrost for spring.

I used a very basic method for candle-making, but as always, play around and adjust to see what works best for you. (I over-did the wax a bit with these ones, they're not usually quite so square.)

Patrons can find detailed directions with pictures as well as additional ways to incorporate magic into your candles in this morning’s post.

You will need:

- Paper milk or juice cartons
- Paraffin wax or beeswax (or old candles)
- Double boiler
- Candle wicks or a small taper candle that's as tall as your carton
- Snow or ice
- Add-ins (herbs, charms, tiny crystals, crayons, etc.)

Cut your cartons so they're even all the way around.

Pack in your snow or ice (be sure to mix in any herbs, colors, etc.).

Melt the wax in your double boiler.

Poke a hole in the center of the snow (you want to make sure your candle has a strong core). Place the wick in the well and gently hold it in place. As an easier option, stick a taper candle in the middle.

Carefully pour the melted wax into the well. As it cools, it’ll create a lacy pattern.

Scrape/manipulate the bottom so it stands.

Happy Saint Brigid's Day! Happy Imbolc!🌞
